10 open source softwares for web designer

It is a common sense for business to set up a website now, hence web designers are the regular human resource of company. However web designers usually have to spend quite big money on the purchase of professional design softwares, such as the Adobe design suite which costs 2-3 thousands, which is big burden for individual.

Fortunately, open-source community will always provide good freebies for us, and we introduce 10 open-source software. Although they still cannot replace the features of Adobe software completely, but as long as designer use them well, it is not difficult to produce high quality web design.

Video Effects: Jahshaka

Can be used to replace Adobe After Effects, it carry out real-time video editing and special effects, and support for OpenGL and OpenML, and its performance is as good as commercial software. Jahshaka currently come with Windows, Linux and Mac OSX versions.

Photo Editor: CinePaint

It is a good choice to replace Adobe Photoshop and meet the requirements of high-end graphics, high-color image processing, such as DPX, 16bit TIFF and OpenEXR, and even to meet the demand for high-resolution images in the Linux OS.

Page editor: Amaya

Can replace Adobe Dreamweaver, especially Amaya is web page editor provided by W3C, and it can help designers to write W3C standardised HTML 4.0 code and support multiple operating system.

Process mapping: Open Office Draw

Can replace Microsoft Visio, it is part of OpenOffice.org suite and is free and come with excellent documents and technical support.

3D Construction: Blender

Blender can be used to replace a wide range of 3D design software such as Autodesk 3DS Max, Its features are very strong and very popular.

Quick image browsing: Imgv

Can be used to replace Adobe Bridge, It is a good tool to browse large number of pictures, it provides not only zoom in/out functions, but also functions of focus, picture player, multiple picture browsing and many other wide range of functions.

Vector illustration: Inkscape

Inkscape can be used to replace Adobe Illustrator, or Fireworks. It supports XML, SVG, CSS and also can be used as web page design. If web designer starts to draw the draft page, Inkscape is a good choice.

Vector graphics: Xara LX

Corel DRAW user can choose Xara LX which has many similar features for drawing posters, icons and other art objects. However, It only supports Linux, FreeBSD and Unix platforms.

Audio and video editing: Avidemux

Very similar to Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere, it is good tool for the video-based editing, encoding and decoding the multimedia files etc. Although it does not provide as many functions as Adobe does, it is excellent free software for designer to edit video files.

Analog painting: Pencil
Can be used to replace Toon Boom Studio to create animation and hand-painted image etc. It also provides the concept of timeline to produce animation files easily.
